Lysozyme and hypokalaemia.

چکیده
Serum potassium, lysozyme and urinary lysozyme measurements were made in 98 patients with tuberculosis, 18 with sarcoidosis and 30 with acute myeloid leukaemia. Serum K concentration fell below 3.5 mmol/l in 17 of the 30 leukaemic patients and only 7 of these had raised serum lysozyme concentrations. None of the patients in the tuberculosis-sarcoidosis group with lysozymaemia or lysozymuria developed hypokalaemia. This study suggests that raised lysozyme concentratiors are not causally related to hypokalaemia.

Lysozyme: a brief review.
Serum lysozyme (muramidase) estimation is a simple, convenient and useful laboratory investigation. A review of the literature shows that lysozyme has been implicated as an aetiological factor in various disorders, and credited with being a prognostic indicator in acute myeloid leukaemia, but these promises have not been fulfilled. This low molecular weight protein is found in the urine of some...
متن کاملLysozymuria and acute disorders of renal function.
On the assumption that increased urinary lysozyme concentration (;lysozymuria') indicates tubular proteinuria and therefore impaired tubular function, urinary lysozyme has been estimated in acute disorders where transient disturbances of renal function might be expected, in cases diagnosed clinically as extrarenal uraemia, and in a few examples of acute renal disease. Reversible lysozymuria occ...
متن کاملHypokalaemia: Improving the investigation, management and therapeutic monitoring of hypokalaemic medical inpatients at a district general hospital
Hypokalaemia is prevalent in 20% of hospitalised patients. Furthermore, inadequate management of hypokalemia was identified in 24% of these patients. Associated with significant patient morbidity and mortality, the identification, investigation, and treatment of hypokalaemia was identified as an area for improvement in the management of medical inpatients. The project aims to measure the assess...
متن کاملHypokalaemia: an independent risk factor of Enterobacteriaceae peritonitis in CAPD patients.
BACKGROUND Hypokalaemia is a relatively common complication in uraemic patients undergoing continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). The hazards of hypokalaemia are multiple and have been correlated with patient morbidity and mortality. Whether it is associated with increased risk of peritonitis remains to be addressed. METHODS We retrospectively analysed our CAPD patients who had com...
متن کاملHypokalaemia and hyperkalaemia.
Disturbances in potassium homoeostasis presenting as low or high serum potassium are common, especially among hospitalised patients. Given the fact that untreated hypokalaemia or hyperkalaemia is associated with high morbidity and mortality, it is critical to recognise and treat these disorders promptly. In this article, normal potassium homoeostasis is reviewed initially and then a pathophysio...
